Performance tracing done on opeflow has revealed we are spending a lot of time being contended on JVM direct buffers. The solution is to use pools, but these are not a clear-cut win in 4.0.17. 4.0.18 vastly improves that (http://netty.io/news/2014/04/01/4-0-18-Final.html). 4.0.19 has additional fixes especially around the linux-native support, which may be useful at a later point. |

Another reason to upgrade is https://github.com/netty/netty/issues/2301, which affects the handler openflowjava is using. |
