Check for null around reading from operational context.

on ubuntu 10.04 laptop with mininet 2.1 and OVS 2.1. ran cbench with the following params and haven't seen this issue

cbench -c 10.0.0.3 -p 6653 -m 1000 -l 50 -s 16 -M 100 -t
